President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that an amendment to the Act on Decentralization has been proposed by the government to Parliament to ensure that 33 percent of elected council members are women.
The President said this while speaking at a ceremony held at the President's Office regarding the 100 day campaign pledges this morning.
He noted in his speech that the government is undertaking many efforts to empower local councils. The President noted that this included reinstating the powers that had been taken away by the previous administration.
President Solih also added that his administration has also prioritized financially empowering the local councils. He said that while amendments to bring about this financial empowering has been proposed to Parliament, 5 percent of state budget and 40 percent of revenue will be directly handed to local councils.
