Government has proposed an amendment to the General Elections Act to allow visually impaired persons to be able to vote independently without assistance from another.
The amendment was proposed by Hinnavaru constituency MP Jeehan Mahmood, stating that a hard sheet plastic material can be used on the ballots to allow the visually impaired to vote independently. The amendment further stated that EC staff at the ballot centres should be trained to assist them with using the ballot sheets.
The amendment was proposed to ensure independent voting and secrecy in the ballot for the coming elections.
