Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that a new vote needs to be taken to identify the system of governance that the people want.

President Nasheed said this while speaking at the Parliamentary candidate debate 2019 hosted by Public Service Media (PSM).

While President Nasheed is running as a candidate for Central-Machchangoalhi constituency, he said that the Constitution grants the people major powers. Additionally, he said that after the 2008 amendment to the constitution, a questionable vote was taken regarding the system of governance. He noted that the voters list was also announced at this time, stating those who can, and cannot vote.

The former President further said that while a Presidential system of governance was determined through that vote, the amount of votes exceeded the voters list at that time. He said as such, that it is time to hold a new vote to determine the system of governance that the people want. He also said that should the people of Maldives vote for a Presidential system of governance, he is prepared for the matter will be implemented as such and vice versa.
