Maldives Police Service has revealed that the arrest of Avas News Video Journalist Hussain Juman came after he had obstructed police duty and attacked an officer during the opposition protest last Thursday night.

Following Juman's arrest, Maldives Journalists Association condemned the arrest.

However, a statement issued by the Police on Saturday noted that Juman was arrested after he attacked an officer, while they were trying to arrest a protestor.

Police further revealed that he was released by the Criminal Court yesterday, after being presented to the court for a remand hearing. However, they noted that the case is still being investigated.

In their report condemning the arrest, MJA noted that the constant violence subjected to journalists who cover protests is something of deep concern for them. Hence, they called on the government and the police service to provide a safe environment for journalists who cover such events.
