The Council of Jumhooree Party (JP) on Tuesday decided to contest at the upcoming 2023 Presidential Election, producing their own candidate.
During a meeting held at Kunooz today, the council had unanimously decided that Qasim Ibrahim should compete at the election on his own, and to be open to any parties willing to form a coalition with them in order to win the election.
During the national congress of the party held last February, it was decided to advise the council on contesting at the election. The council which was elected during the national congress was granted the authority to make a decision regarding the election.
The council had granted Qasim the powers to hold discussions regarding coalition formation as well as make a decision about the party's candidate.
Qasim has played important roles in previous elections. Even though he contested in the 2008 and 2013 elections, the candidate who won in each of those elections was backed by Qasim. While he did not run in 2018, he did support President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
President Solih had previously sent a letter to all the coalition parties inviting them for discussions on coalition and elections. As such, Adaalat and MDA have already joined President Solih in coalition for the elections.
