Jumhooree Party (JP) on Monday voted against a motion to dissolve the role of party leader.

Member of Parliament for Maamigilli Constituency, Qasim Ibrahim has served as the Leader of the party ever since it was founded.

The party held its 149th council meeting today, where the vote took place.

Speaking regarding the meeting, the Spokesperson of JP, Ali Solih stated that a council meeting was called to decide on the motions to be submitted to the national congress. He noted that during the meeting, a motion was put forward to dissolve the role of a leader and instead have the role of President lead the party.

Ali Solih highlighted that after extensive discussions, it was decided that the role of party leader should be continued. He also added that the council decided to dissolve the role of President and Vice President, though the decision will officially be made by Congress.

The party is gearing up to hold its National Congress on February 24th, where the party will elect a council that will make all decisions of the party related to the Presidential Election. Leadership of the party will participate in the congress along with Ministers currently serving under a JP slot, council members, and regional presidents.

JP had previously stated that they will produce a candidate to compete in the Presidential Election. As per the registry of the Elections Commission of the Maldives, there are over 17,913 registered members of the party, making it the third largest party in the Maldives.

The party has played an important role in all three elections held in the democratic history of the Maldives. They had also competed in the 2008 and 2013 elections.
