President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Friday announced that the Maldives would donate one million tuna cans - 500,000 each - to Turkey and Syria following the earthquake on Monday.
The donation will be made to assist in the efforts to provide humanitarian and relief aid to those displaced by the disaster.
The collective death toll has risen to 22,000 with 79,487 injured and over 14 million in need of relief and humanitarian aid.
President's Spokesperson Miuvan Mohamed Tweeted on Friday that President Solih has sent a message of condolence to Turkey and Syria.
"Following the devastation caused by the earthquake in Türkiye and Syria, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent messages conveying his condolences to the leaders of both countries. The President has also decided to send 1,000,000 cans of tuna to both countries as a symbolic gesture from the Maldivian people towards the relief efforts," his Tweets read.
