Henveiru Uthuru Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Muizzu has alleged that the government spends MVR 102 million annually as rent paid to private individuals for buildings that are used to run government offices and godowns.

Muizzu made the allegation in a motion submitted to the Parliament today, asking for a quick solution to the increased spending by the government as rent money for government offices and godowns.

He highlighted in the motion that MVR 8.5 million is spent on rent each month by the government. Muizzu added that practicing this in the long-term is bad finance management on the part of the government and that it breeder room for corruption and wasteful spending.

In addition to this, the motion highlighted that some government offices are run in places where it was not suitable to do so and that those operations should be discontinued.

The motion stressed that if this expenditure is saved, it will redirect the expenses to more important developmental projects that have a direct impact on the tax payers.
