Two people have been injured in a speedboat explosion in M. Dhiggaru lagoon.

Dhiggaru Council's Vice President Ismail Mahidh told 'One' on Tuesday that the incident took place around 0930hrs and that there were two individuals on the speedboat - the owner and a crew - when the explosion happened.

Mahidh said that the two were about to go fishing when the explosion occurred.

"It is a speedboat that makes frequent trips. They had a trip in the morning as well and were probably about to go fishing when the explosion happened. It is most likely a battery explosion," Mahidh stated.

He added that the two individuals have been brought to Male' for further treatment and that the owner of the speedboat suffered major burns.

Mahidh further added that the fire spread rapidly in the speedboat due to the large number of petrol on board. .
