Criminal Court Chief Judge Ahmed Shakeel and three others have applied for the vacant seat at the High Court.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) confirmed that while applications for one of the two vacant seats at the High Court closed on Monday afternoon, they had received four applications in total.

Apart from Criminal Court Chief Judge, Civil Court Judge Mariyam Waheedha, Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo Court Magistrate Mohamed Shaneez Abdulla, Hussain Shakeeb, Hulhumale’, Dholhas applied for the position.

Among the applicants, Judge Shakeel is notable for presiding over former President Abdulla Yameen's latest corruption trial where he found Yameen guilty of corruption and money laundering charges related to the sale of resort development acquisition and leasing rights to Vaau Atoll Aarah, and sentenced him to 11 years in jail.
