Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has expressed concern over the targeted harassment directed at journalists of Mihaaru News, and had called to speed up the investigation into the case.
A statement by MJA voiced their concern over the harassment via social media and other means toward the journalists. It stated that the journalists are not only being harassed but fabricated stories are being spread about them in a defamatory manner.
It further added that the freedom of the media and the right to protect reputation and name is a fundamental right granted by the Constitution of the Maldives, and that such harassment targeted at specific journalists is not acceptable in a civilized, democratic society.
MJA further stated that while they believe in criticism, it should be constructive criticism free of any personal bias. However, they highlighted that the harassment targeted at Mihaaru News journalists as of late are not in a such manner.
The association had also called on all relevant authorities to ensure the rights of the journalists as the publication readies to submit a case to the court regarding the issues as well.
