An inmate at Male' Prison passed away on Friday while undergoing medical treatment for fever.
Corrections said on Friday that Mohamed Rasheed, 36, Karankaage/L. Kunahandhoo was taken to Male' Prison on Sunday to serve his sentence of 6 months and 14 days on theft charges.
Corrections said he was treated by the prison medical centre for fever but taken to IGMH around 2200hrs last night due to worsening conditions. IGMH reported that Mohamed Rasheed passed away around 1045hrs on Friday morning, Corrections said.
"No medical issues were highlighted in his initial medical exam when he was brought into prison on the 8th of January. He was not undergoing any medical treatments either," Corrections said.
Corrections has since informed his family, Inspector of Correctional Services, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, and National Integrity Commission of his death.
