President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the reclamation of Giraavaru Lagoon will finish by mid-year.

The lagoon is being reclaimed to provide housing for residents of Male' City. Per the government's plan, a total of 5,000 land plots will be given to residents of Male' from Hulhumale, Gulhifalhu and the reclaimed Grivaararu Lagoon. This is divided into 1,000 from Hulhumale, and 2,000 each from Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru Lagoon.

During a presidential primary campaign meeting with residents of Male', the President noted that one phase of Giraavaru Lagoon reclamation had been completed, and the second has been contracted.

The government had previously unveiled plans to develop a city in the reclaimed Giraavaru Lagoon, and had opened for investors with a minimum bidding amount of USD 5 million.

While reclamation works are nearing completion, the President also said that land plots will be given to residents of Male' under the government's housing policy. As such he noted that it includes 16,000 flats, row-houses, and land plots.

He further noted that evaluation works are currently ongoing, and the land plots will be awarded in a fair and transparent manner.
