Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the decision on matters will be taken up at Parliament, while it is the government that will implement these conclusions, within a Presidential System of governance.

President Nasheed said this while speaking at campaign event for Parliamentary hopeful fot Ungoofaaru constituency, Mohamed Waheed. He said that the biggest power that runs this country is Parliament and that government should be run in accordance with the decisions of Parliament.

The former President said that Parliament therefore also has to reach decisions on what the government needs to implement. He noted that the campaign pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih can only be fulfilled through certain legal powers that need to be granted to him.  

President Nasheed noted few of President Solih’s campaign promises. As such, he said that in addition to construction of harbors, should they be needed on the island President Solih had also pledged to provide housing and establish a water and sewerage system on every island without exception. He said that President Solih had also spoke of constructing roads on islands as well as improving the entertainment available for locals, establishing a proper education as well as hospitals. President Nasheed said that it is the people’s wish that these pledges be fulfilled word for word as initially pledged.

He said that the only way that the pledges of MDP’s Parliamentary support policy, Agenda ‘19 can be fulfilled is through the support of Parliament.

The former President said that while the current government and President belong to MDP, the majority elected to Parliament should also be from MDP.
