Parliamentary hopeful of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for the North Thinadhoo constituency, Abdul Mughni has said that

conclusions drawn by the party were dependant on false narratives from social media.

The statement has been made by Mughni at a time where current MDP President and former Maldivian President, Mohamed Nasheed had made an announcement concerning Mughni. President Nasheed had said that he is retracting MDP’s endorsement for Mughni as a candidate and reiterated that he will not be attending any of Mughni’s campaign activities either. Mughni released a statement in response, saying that he does not believe that the party can take such actions based off of false narratives circulating on social media. He said that while a major allegation has been made against him, he believes that retracting the party’s endorsement of his candidacy without allowing a proper reprieve is not a wise decision.

He noted that the false allegations on social media were made by those that seek to defame and humiliate him. Mughni further condemned these actions and said that the despicable efforts have been taken up in an attempt to diminish his constituent’s support for him.

While there are allegations of domestic violence taken up against Mughni, he has claimed that he has never, nor will he would never commit such an act. Additionally, Mughni reiterated that he will not withdraw his candidacy and added that he will instead move forward with his campaign with even more vigor and spirit. He said that he will remain a member of MDP and added that he will continue to work towards achieving the North-Thinadhoo constituency in Parliamentary elections.
