Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been released after being arrested during a demonstration by the opposition coalition in which three protesters and the mayor, were arrested.

The coalition, made up of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), has been holding protests in response to the money laundering conviction of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Yameen was found guilty of money laundering and bribery related to the sale of V. Aarah for resort development on December 25 and was sentenced to 11 years in prison and a $5 million fine.

All three protesters have since been released from police custody.

The demonstration took place at the Majeedhee Magu-Sosun Magu junction, where Muizzu and three other activists were arrested.

Police have confirmed that all those who were arrested during the protest have since been released from custody.
