Elections Commission (EC) has fined six political parties for failing to submit financial statements.
EC said on Thursday that the parties fined include PNC, MTD, Adhalat Party, DRP, MSLDP and MNP. The parties were fined MVR 20,000 to be paid before 31st January.
As per the Political Parties Act, all political parties must submit their financial statements to EC within the first three months of every year. EC said the parties that were fined are parties that have not submitted financial statements by 31st March.
EC further said that they could file a petition against the parties that do not pay the fine by 31st January, and that party funds would be released to the parties after deducting the fine.
