The state has proposed a jail term of eight years for the charge of corruption and 11 years for the charge of money laundering on former President Abdulla Yameen, who had been found guilty of both charges related to the sale of resort development acquisition and leasing rights to Vaau Atoll Aarah.

The Criminal Court on Sunday afternoon found him guilty of the charges, as key opposition figures staged a protest outside the courtroom alleging that the state had been trying to influence the trial of the former strongman.

Former Felidhoo MP Yoosuf Naeem has also been found guilty of offering a bribe to the former president, hence the state has moved for an eight-year jail term for him.

The state had also requested to fine the former president with an amount that is five times more than the amount that was laundered.
