Kudagiri Picnic Island to open by end of year

Ministry of National Planning has revealed that Kudagiri, which is being developed as a picnic island for the Greater Male' Region residents, will be opened before the end of the year.

The island was initially set for a July 26 opening and was later pushed back to November 11. However, with pending work still on the island the opening had to be delayed once again.

State Minister at the Planning Ministry, Akram Kamaluddin revealed to One Online today that they are continuing the final preparations for the opening of the island.

Establishing a picnic island for Male' residents is one of the presidential pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who had visited the island for a site inspection last June. During his visit, he also took part in a tree plantation event.

While the Ministry is gearing up to open the island, a recent announcement by HDC noted that those who are interested and possess the necessary resources should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the corporation. The deadline for submission of EOIs are on December 7th by 11:00am.

The corporation is seeking four ferry dhoanis to operate ferries between Male' and Kudagiri daily. This includes two vessels with a capacity between 50 to 70 passengers and two vessels with a capacity between 80 to 100 passengers.

The corporation has also finalized ferry timings between the two islands. As such departures from Male' City will be at 06:30, 06:15, and 07:10 in the morning, while departures from Kudagiri will be at 17:20, 17:40, and 18:00 in the evening.

However, the ferry schedule is expected to change once the service begins.
