Local Government Authority (LGA) has suspended Raa Atoll Dhuvaafaru Council Secretary General (SG) Mohamed Nasih, who was in charge of the council in the interim after all the council members were previously suspended in an alleged case of corruption.
LGA suspended all members of the council last Sunday.
Speaking to One Online, Chief Executive Officer at LGA, Afshan Latheef revealed that the SG was suspended due to a case that was being investigated by the Civil Service Commission, and that a new interim in-charge has been appointed to the council.
While the alleged cases of corruption had come to light, council member Ahmed Salooh had resigned voluntarily. The bi-election to the vacant seat due to this is expected to take place on January 24th.
The case of corruption was revealed in a special report compiled by the LGA. The report revealed that the Island Council along with the Women's Development Committee (WDC) had acted in violation of the Public Finance Regulation, Civil Service Regulation, as well as several other regulations related to finances. As such, the report highlighted 34 such violations.
These included failing to fulfill their roles and responsibilities and failing to keep books and records as per the regulations.
It further included transferring large sums of money into the personal accounts of Council and WDC members as well as administrative staff, and swindling money from the council further.
The corruption case was submitted to the ACC for further investigation by the LGA on July 19th. Following an investigation, the ACC submitted to the Prosecutor General to charge those involved on November 8th.
