A Maldivian man has been sentenced to life for trying to smuggle drugs into Addu City.
Shammoon Mohamed, S. Hithadhoo, was charged for trying to smuggle Diaformin inside his boxers on a Maldivian Flight from Male' City to Addu City. Following an intelligence report, Police took him into custody when he landed in Addu City.
Shammoon confessed to carrying drugs inside his boxers and handed over the drugs to Police. The drugs weighed 99.25 grams according to Police.
Shammoon denied the charges against him during the preliminary hearings, stating that Police searched him without a court order.
As such, Police submitted witness statements from the officers on scene as evidence.
Judge Safwath Habeeb on Sunday sentenced Shammoon to prison for life and fined him MVR 100,000 as well. However, since he had already spent 2 years and 23 days in remand before the sentence, Shammoon will serve 22 years, 11 months and 7 days.
