Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) has requested the Budget Review Committee for an additional MVR 15 million to their budget in the proposed State Budget for 2023.

The University had met with the budget committee regarding the proposed budget and voiced concerns regarding certain points in the budget.

Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives, Dr. Ibrahim Zakariyya Moosa noted during the meeting that covering payroll for their employees does not ensure a smooth operation of the university. He added that improving the infrastructure of the university was essential as well.

The Vice-Chancellor had brought several points to the attention of the budget committee, which he stated were necessary to be included in the budget under the new policy of the university.

This includes establishing a special department to recruit international students to study at the university as well as hiring employees required to run the department. In addition to this, it included strengthening the accreditation system as well as establishing a marketing department to advertise the university and its programs. The University highlighted several other important points as well.

After reviewing the points and concerns of the university, several members of the budget committee supported increasing the budget as requested by the Islamic University.

Budget committee head and MP for Kinbidhoo, Mohamed Nashiz noted that the budget committee will refer to the points made by the university while reviewing the budget,

Currently, MVR 43.6 million has been allocated to the university as the budget for 2023.
