Maldives Police Service (MPS) gears up for the use of tasers during special operations.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed first announced the possible use of tasers during Police operations in 2020. MPS also held trials for tasers during the same year. The Parliament also looked into the usage of tasers by Police after public concerns were raised.
At a press conference held at Iskandhar Koshi on Wednesday by Home Ministry, CP Hameed said that tasers will be used by select officers during special operations. He added that Police officers need to be trained to combat violent crimes.
"We do not believe Police can go empty-handed when tackling violent crimes and terrorism," CP Hameed said.
He added that trainings are ongoing to begin the use of tasers in special operations before the end of the year. CP Hameed further added that officers using tasers will wear body cams to ensure accountability by the officers.
MPS has 25 taser guns at present.
