Home Minister Imran Abdulla has stated that a High-Security Prison is being developed to hold dangerous criminals and those arrested under serious crimes.

Speaking during a program on Monday night aired on Public Service Media (PSM), Minister Imran noted that keeping dangerous criminals together with those arrested for other things posed a great challenge.

He noted that a High Security Prison is being developed to address and solve this issue in the Maldives.

As such, he noted that following research into how such prisons are operated across the world, they are now getting ready to begin work on developing the prison. He added that the prison is expected to be established within the next six months.

Addressing the current state of prisons, the Minister noted that several works have been done to improve the conditions of prisons. As such, he highlighted that prison torture is no longer tolerated, adding that prison officers have been trained to be compassionate towards prisoners.
