Speaker Mohamed Nasheed concluded the Parliament Session on Tuesday without asking for a vote on the Bill on Amendment to the Goods and Services Tax Act, as lawmakers staged a protest to express disappointment.
As of late, the second half of parliament sittings are being presided over by Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla or Vilufushi Member of Parliament Hassan Afeef. When Monday's parliament session concluded without voting on the Bill, MP Afeef was presiding over the Parliament.
While lawmakers claimed that MP Afeef's conclusion to Monday's Parliament session was in violation of the regulations, Speaker Nasheed defended MP Afeef noting that none of the proceedings from Monday were in violation of any regulations.
Speaker Nasheed presided over the second half of the session on Tuesday, and asked for a vote on the motion submitted by Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim regarding the Chagos Archipelago issue. Out of 84 present members, only 30 voted to accept the motion and 42 voted against it. 37 votes were required to accept the motion.
Following the vote on said motion, lawmakers began to protest during the session today as well. However, Speaker Nasheed had proceeded to conclude the session amid the protests.
