14 arrested during counter-terrorism operation were plotting massive attack: Police

Maldives Police Service has said that the people arrested as part of the counter terrorism operation were planning a terror attack with explosives.

Police and MNDF carried out a joint counter terrorism operation in Addu City and K. Guraidhoo.

Speaking at the press conference at Iskandhar Koshi on Monday, Head of Terrorism and Violent Extremism Investigation Unit, Inspector Uswath Ahmed said the 14 people arrested during the operation were plotting with terror group IS to carry out a terror attack with explosives.

Inspector Uswath said 11 households were searched in Addu City and 10 people arrested, while 4 households were searched and 2 people arrested in Male' City and 2 people arrested from K. Guraidhoo.

"We found evidence related to the case during the searches," Inspector Uswath said.

She said the authorities had found material believed to be explosives during the search, but did not specify the intended target of the attack.

Nine out of the 14 arrested have previous records of arrest on terror charges, Inspector Uswath said. She added that all 9 of them were from Addu City.
