Maldives has won the World's Leading Destination award for the third time.

The award was accepted on behalf of Maldives by Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom and CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation (MMPRC), Thoyyib Mohamed at the 29th World Travel Awards ceremony at Muscat, Russia on Friday night.

Maldives competed with 18 nations for the award.

The World Tourism Awards were first conferred in 1993 to the leading tourism destinations across the globe.

MMPRC aslo won the Leading Tourism Board award on Friday night while TMA won the Leading Seaplane Operator Award.

Maldives won the Leading Destination Award for the third consecutive time this year as the nation celebrates 50 years of tourism.

MMPRC had previously stated that Maldives was able to win the award even during the pandemic owing to the efforts of everyone in the industry. MMPRC said the award will open opportunities for Maldives in the tourism sector as a leading destination.
