The Minister of External Affairs of India, Sushma Swaraj is to arrive in Maldives on an official visit this Sunday.

It was reported that the Indian Minister will be meeting with senior officials of the Maldivian government as well as signing several important agreements.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs have neither confirmed nor denied the information and have not revealed any official information regarding the visit.

While the visit is reportedly taking place, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid, has confirmed recently that India and Maldives are to sign several important agreements next week.  

Minister Shahid spoke regarding the matter on

“Rajje Miadhu” program of Public Service Media (PSM) last Tuesday. He said that while India had stopped the import of gravel and gravel soil to Maldives three years ago, the approval to restart the process will be confirmed by next week.

The Minister had further reiterated during the interview that an arrangement for the import of basic food and beverages to Maldives from India will also be completed by the coming week.

The basic food and beverages imported to Maldives from India include onions, eggs and grains. The import of these goods take place under a yearly agreement between the governments of Maldives and India. The renewal of this agreement takes place annually.

Minister Shahid spoke at the interview regarding the increase of the period of this annual agreement to three years. He also said that there will be further ease in visa processes as well.
