Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he does not support sale of liquor in local islands. He also claimed that he has not said so under any circumstance.

While President Nasheed has said that the sale of liquor at guest houses of local islands bring in a large income at a campaign event at Alif Alif Thoddoo, he has taken to twitter to refute the matter.

He added that the saddest part of the commentary on the topic is being carried out by those whose businesses carry out the sale of liquor.

President Nasheed spoke regarding the matter at the campaign event and said that the most popular product for sales is perfume, then chocolate, liquor and cigarettes. He went onto say that these are all products that we know will generate major business.

He said that guesthouse businesses are good ventures for Maldives, and said that the businesses will yield great profits.

President Nasheed had said at the event that this is a fact that has been known to us Maldivians all along. He reiterated that the biggest happiness for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is the prime example of World Bank developmental efforts in the island of Maafushi.

While the former President has said this, several religious scholars have taken to social media to express their outrage regarding the commentary as well as President Nasheed.
