Islamic Ministry has lodged a report with Maldives Police Service after videos surfaced showing a Hindu act of worship taking place before the commencement of Addu City's road development project.
The project is spearheaded by India's Afcons Infrastructure Limited, who are also leading the Thilamale' Bridge project. Videos of the ritual surfaced on social media on Tuesday leading to scores of people calling for an investigation.
Islamic Ministry said on Wednesday night that the Islamic Minister, Dr. Ahmed Zahir has lodged a report with police, requesting an investigation into the incident.
"As per the Religious Unity Act, it is illegal for non-Muslims who visit Maldives and non-Muslims who live in Maldives to express their religious slogans, and for any Maldivian to partake in such acts," Islamic Ministry said.
The Ministry said that as a Muslim nation, expressing other religious slogans is against the law in the Maldives. Minister Dr. Zahir has urged all foreign workers to be familiarised with the Maldivian regulations.
The Ministry further added that the Government and the people must work together to maintain religious unity in the country.
