Home Minister Imran Abdulla has stated that he will not hesitate to take action against police if any foul play was involved in the man's death in police custody.
A 41-year-old man from GDh. Hoandehdhoo who was in police custody died after suffering chest pains and a seizure, police said.
The man was taken to GDh. Madaveli Hospital, but doctors reported the man was already dead when he was brought in. Police has said an autopsy will be conducted to identify the cause of death.
Home Minister Imran Tweeted on Tuesday night that the incident is being investigation under police professional standards. He urged all related authorities to prioritise the case.
"If there is any foul play on the part of police, we will not hesitate to take any and all necessary action," Imran said.
Police said the man was taken to police custody on a rented speedboat which also had other civilians on it at the time.
Police also said the incident has been shared with National Integrity Commission (NIC) and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
'One' has come to know that the man who passed away was arrested on a drug related offence.
Madaveli Council President Riyaz Hassan told 'One' on Tuesday night that residents have gathered outside the hospital in protest after the incident.
