A man has died while in police custody.

Police said on Tuesday that a 41-year-old man from GDh. Hoandehdhoo who was taken into police custody was taken to GDh. Madaveli Hospital after he showed signs of a seizure following chest pain.

Doctors at GDh. Madaveli Hospital reported that the man was already dead when he was brought in, police said. As such, police said an autopsy will be conducted to find the cause of death.

Police said the man was taken to police custody on a rented speedboat which also had other civilians on it at the time.

Police also said the incident has been shared with National Integrity Commission (NIC) and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

'One' has come to know that the man who passed away was arrested on a drug related offence.

Madaveli Council President Riyaz Hassan told 'One' on Tuesday night that residents have gathered outside the hospital in protest after the incident.
