Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has stated there are 1,200 air traffic movements every day in the Maldives.
Speaking at the ceremony to celebrate 100 years of International Air Traffic Control, MACL's Deputy CEO Ibrahim Thoha stated on Thursday that VIA gets 800 air traffic movements on average every day.
Maldives currently has 17 airports and around 100 sea plane platforms, with an additional airport to be opened before the year end. Thoha added that an average of 1,200 air traffic movements are recorded daily, and that the numbers are predicted to increase during the peak season.
Thoha added that the statistics reveal that Maldives should maintain secure and profitable air traffic operations, and that MACL has installed modern technology in the air traffic control centres. He further added that air traffic controllers and ground staff should work together and collectively to ensure seamless operations.
Speaking on the importance of air traffic controller's roles, Thoha stated that it takes multiple teams and great effort to ensure safe passage to aircrafts. He noted that the air traffic controllers have undergone multiple trainings to make the new parallel taxiway and the code of reference operational.
