STELCO has been contracted with repairing and maintaining streetlights in 12 islands across Vaavu and Kaafu Atoll.
At a ceremony held at STELCO head office on Monday, the island councils of Kaafu and Vaavu atolls signed the agreement with STELCO.
STELCO will repair and maintain streetlights in 12 islands as part of their CSR initiative. The streetlights are currently maintained by the island councils.
The islands STELCO will maintain streetlights in:
- K. Maafushi
- K. Himmafushi

- K. Thulusdhoo
- K. Gulhi
- K. Guraidhoo
- V. Fulidhoo
- V. Thinadhoo

The signing ceremony was attended by CEO of Local Government Authority (LGA), Afshan Latheef, STELCO MD Ahmed Shareef and STELCO's Chairman, Rtd. Brigadier General, Ibrahim Mohamed Didi along with STELCO's management as well as powerhouse managers and island council members of the 12 islands.
Although STELCO had offered to maintain streetlights in K. Kaashidhoo, the island council opted out of the agreement stating that the council does not believe STELCO can do maintenance according to public expectations. Addressing this, STELCO MD Shared said STELCO is the pioneer in the industry and that no other company can compete with the services they provide. He added that the difference in opinion is a separate issue and that STELCO is willing to work with Kaashidhoo Council.
"We assure you that we can provide professional and efficient maintenance of the streetlights in Kaashidhoo," Shareef said.
STELCO took over the maintenance of streetlights in 14 islands in Ari Atoll in September 2022. As such, STELCO now provides maintenance to 29 out of 30 islands STELCO provides services to.
