Judicial Service Commission (JSC) President and Thulhadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain has stated that the false narratives regarding Chagos Islands issue are being started to spin the narrative towards a specific political purpose.

MP Hisaan directed the comments to certain lawmakers who have been claiming that the Maldives changing its stand to recognize Mauritius as the sovereign power over the Chagos Islands is equivalent to the country giving up a part of its territory to Mauritius.

Speaking during the debate on an emergency motion submitted by Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef over Maldives’ change in stance on recognizing Mauritius' sovereignty over Chagos, MP Hisaan noted that the question on the issue is whether to endorse the colonization of Chagos by the UK.

She further stated that colonization is not something that could be supported, as a human being and as a country. She further added that advocating to keep Chagos under the power of the United Kingdom was is not an ethical decision.

The lawmaker further said that the debate on having to give up 200 miles from the Special Economic Zone of the Maldives after accepting the advisory decision of the ICJ regarding the sovereignty of Chagos, is being purposefully directed to fulfill certain political goals and to set up false narratives. She asserted that the Maldives had never agreed, and that it never will agree to give up that territory.
