The Ministry of Finance has revealed that the Maldives government has earned MVR 681 million in Green Tax revenue by the month of August 20222.

The Green Tax Report published by the Ministry revealed that MVR 73 million was earned by the Government in Green Tax during the month of August. The month of July posted MVR 61 million in revenue through Green Tax. Both July and August were the months with the lowest revenue through Green Tax during the year so far.

Green Tax revenue from January till August 2022 is now at MVR 681,603,866. The Finance Ministry expects the number to stand at MVR 823 million by the end of the year.

A breakdown of the Green Tax revenue reveals that MVR 69 million was received through resorts while MVR 1 million was received through Hotels while MVR 2 million was received through Guesthouses, and MVR 419,797 through liveaboards added up to a grand total of MVR 73 million.

Kaafu Atoll had the highest contribution, with MVR 27 million being paid by the atoll alone. This included MVR 868,655.28 from Male' City alone. Raa Atoll leads the rest of the Atolls with MVR 7 million, Alif Alif Atolls with MVR 6 million, and Alif Dhaalu Atoll with MVR 5.4 million. Fuvahmulah City had the lowest contribution with MVR 2,563.49.

The report also revealed that 50 projects had received expenditure from the Green Fund, which included major projects such as water and sewerage development as well as harbor construction projects. As such, MVR 107 million was spent during the month of August for such projects from the Green Fund, while MVR 539 million had been spent for the year so far.

The Maldives Green Fund currently has MVR 849 million, including MVR 708 million which was carried forward from last year.
