Fenaka Corporation Limited has started operating the ice plants previously under MIFCO.
Fenaka took over the ice plants on 22 September 2022. Fenaka has said that 12 out of the 14 ice plants are now operational and selling ice to fishing vessels.
Fenaka is selling ice at the same rate as MIFCO, according to the company. Fenaka Managing Director, Ahmed Saeed, said that the prices will be reduced once the company finds other means to produce ice at lower cost. He noted that two of the ice plants require repair work to be operational. He added that repair works will be completed soon as possible.
The ice plants were transferred by the State to Fenaka since the company is well equipped to produce ice. The decision was also made since Fenaka provides electricity and water services to most of the residential islands and can reduce cost of ice production.
Fenaka has also developed a ‘Fenaka Ice’ mobile app to provide ease of access to fishermen to buy ice. Fishermen can check the amount of ice available in Fenaka ice plants and make a booking for purchase.
