President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the tourism industry was introduced for the betterment of the Maldives and that Maldivians in the industry are capable of leading roles in the tourism sector.

President Solih made the remarks while speaking at the Tourism Appreciation Reception held at Crossroads on Thursday night to mark the Golden Jubilee of tourism in Maldives.

He stated that the Maldives has to compete with the biggest brands in tourism and that it requires the most qualified people at the forefront of the industry. He added that this is currently not possible with just local staff.

President Solih however added that while the Tourism Ministry has opened opportunities for foreigners in the industry, the ministry must also ensure similar opportunities are opened for the locals in hospitality industry.

"The Maldivians have great opportunities in the sector. They have the opportunity to study in various fields and compete for managerial positions in the sector. We, the Maldivians, have created a great industry and we can also train Maldivians who will compete for leading positions in the industry," President Solih said.

President Solih added that although the Tourism industry began without the expertise it has now, the hard work from the locals has made Maldives the number one destination in the world. As such, President Solih further added that the sector is celebrating the undying commitment from the locals to the industry.

He stated that Maldives must continue to provide exceptional services in the hospitality industry to maintain their status as the number one destination in the world.
