Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali has stated that work is in progress to compile a regulation for tuitions along with teacher's license.
Minister Dr. Aishath Ali made the remarks while answering questions by Parliament members on Wednesday, stating that even though the teacher's salaries have been increased, the tuition fees parents have to spend have not decreased. As such, she noted that some teachers are earning close to MVR 100,000 a month by giving tuitions.
Minister Dr. Aishath Ali said it is concerning that parents should have to spend so much on tuition fees. She highlighted although schools do an appropriate job at teaching, some parents preferred to get tuition for their children.
"There are two factors to this. some parents opt for tuitions because they want their children to get exceptional grades. We even see pre-schoolers getting tuition. In some cases, this might not be in the best interest of the child. As such, the culture of giving tuition should be something we need to consider and discuss," Minister Dr. Aishath Ali said.
