An Indian national has been fined MVR 60,000 for smuggling gold into the Maldives.

The State charged Nazim with smuggling goods into the Maldives. As per Customs regulations, smuggling could carry a jail term of 6 months to 2 years or a fine between MVR 10,000 to MVR 240,000.

As per the charge summary, Nazim travelled to the Maldives on 17 July around 0800hrs and admitted to having smuggled goods into the Maldives, having swallowed them.

Physical examination of Nazim's excretion revealed gold and other materials in two bullets that he had swallowed to smuggle into the Maldives. He confessed to smuggling and received a MVR 60,000 fine to be paid within 3 months starting from 26 August.
