Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that he does not believe that there should be a separate law to investigate embezzlement and corruption.
The Parliamentary hopeful for Villimale’ constituency, Dr. Jameel said this while speaking at a press conference held by Jumhooree Party (JP). He raised the question as to whether major governments around the world resort to waiting on a separate Bill on Presidential Commissions to investigate, raise charges or carry out due legal process on acts of corruption or embezzlement.
Dr. Jameel said that the entire society had resoundingly opposed the passing of every Bill submitted at Parliament by any former Presidential administration.
He referred to his experience working in investigative fields and noted that he had also worked as the Minister of Home Affairs in a previous administration. Dr. Jameel noted his work at places where charges were raised against people as well as the judicial field and said that Police assistance is vital.in any investigation. He asked whether the empowered Presidential Commissions would have the resources to conduct forensic investigations without the help of Police officers.
He noted that the Commissions will have to turn to Police in that instance and asked the question as to why the same task is being duplicated. Dr. Jameel said that the biggest benefit for the government can be attained by diverting efforts to improve existing institutions. He said as such, that he does not believe that a separate Commission needs to be established to investigate corruption or embezzlement.
The former Vice President said that the investigative process would go swifter if the task of investigating corruption is handed to already existing entities instead of attempting to form separate Commissions.
