Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that this government will fall at the hands of the opposition if a majority in Parliamentary election is not secured.
President Nasheed said this while speaking during a campaign event of Parliamentary hopeful for Hulhudhoo constituency, Ilyas Labeeb. He said that it is vital that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secures a majority in upcoming Parliamentary elections.
He said should the majority slip from the hands of MDP, an incident similar to the likes of that of 2008 may come to pass.
President Nasheed said that the purpose of voting for candidate Ilyas Labeeb is to make sure that President Solih’s administration does not fall at the hands of another coup d'état. He reiterated that it is vital to make sure that another coup does not take place in Maldives.
The former President said that he sees actions similar to that of what had been done before, to execute a coup d'état that led to the the fall of his administration. He noted the years from 2008 to 2012, and said that this is very apparent ro what is taking place now, from observing those two years.
As such, he said that should a majority at Parliament not be secured for MDP, the first attempt of opposition would be to take votes of no confidence on cabinet members and separate them from government. President Nasheed said that the next step would be to ensure that it is immensely difficult to run the government. Following that, he said that efforts will be diverted to stalling projects by withholding funds, which leads to the loss of the confidence placed by independent commissions on the government.
The former President further said that this will lead to these independent institutions to assume the powerlessness of the government and resort to their methods to continue the work. He said that the same process goes for the courts.
He noted that the judges would also opt to not side with the government without a majority at Parliament. President Nasheed said that this will ultimately result in rulings of the courts being tainted with political motivations.
He added that, should independent institutions and courts lose confidence in the government, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Force will also follow suit. He said that this will then lead to those that are practiced in the art of coup d'état to come out with money tainted with bribery and spend on the independent institutions.
President Nasheed said that the change in government comes with bribes offered to these independent commissions, judges, Police and MNDF officers as well as Parliamentary members. He noted that, owed to a lack of faith, this will ultimately lead to a coup and the change of government.
