Maldives National Party (MNP)'s Leader and Dhangethi constituency MP, Mohamed Nazim, has stated that land plots and flats from Greater Male' Region shouldn't be given to Male' residents alone.
Nazim made the remarks while speaking at MNP's national congress - 'The National Convention 2022' - at Thaajuddin School on Friday night. Nazim stated that it is unfair for the government to prioritise Male' residents for social housing in the region. He reiterated that the government's efforts to solve the housing issue shouldn't focus on just Male' residents.
"Solving Male' region's housing issue shouldn't focus on just Male' residents. This ideology needs to be changed", Nazim said.
He added that Housing Minister Aslam shouldn't decide who Male' residents are, and that MNP does not believe he can do so.
"We see certain ministers deciding who Male' residents are. This is not something we believe or accept. Ministers shouldn't be able to decide on residency. That is something the citizens should decide," Nazim added.
He further added that the Male' region was developed by taxpayer money from all citizens. As such, all citizens have a right to housing in the area. Nazim said that it is a great unfairness to let certain citizens benefit from the most economically valuable land in the Maldives.
Additionally, Nazim said other political parties are working on furthering their own personal interests. He added that political parties shouldn't serve the people only when they are in power. Nazim noted that MNP is working on formulating the party's policies on housing.
Nazim said that the most important thing in a multiparty democracy is electing a leader. As such, he added that a majority of the political parties contest in elections, but to serve their own interests. He said such parties have no accountability.
Nazim further added that MNP is not like other parties, and that MNP continues to challenge other parties as a role model political party.
