A resolution submitted by South Galholhu MP Meekail Ismail to include fertility treatments under the Aasandha scheme has been accepted by the Parliament and forwarded to the committee for research.
The resolution was accepted with the votes of 45 members out of 47 present.
Following this, the resolution was forwarded to the Parliament Committee on Social Affairs for further review and research.
MP Meekail noted that currently, the national social health insurance system restricts access to fertility treatments, leaving people undergoing fertility treatments unable to access medications they need on a regular basis. He further highlighted the lack of some medications used by people undergoing fertility treatments in the Maldives.
The lawmaker also talked about the lack of research and studies around the challenges and difficulties in accessing specialist treatments for fertility.
MP Meekail had called to identify the services that can be provided under Aasandha for fertility treatment, establish a proper structure to provide these services and find a holistic solution to the issue.
