Criminal Court on Thursday ordered to place prominent lawyer Nazim Sattar under house arrest for three months and 26 days, after finding him guilty of homosexuality.
Nazim had confessed to being sexually involved with Bangladeshi citizen, MD Alamgir. He has since repented for his sins and apologized for them.
The Penal Code dictates a nine-month and 18-day jail term for Nazim, as per the charges pressed against him by the state. However, during today's hearing, the court sentenced him to a one-month and 28-day jail term. However, upon his request, the court changed his sentence to a three-month and 26-day home arrest.
The leniency in his verdict was due to his admission of guilt, lack of criminal records and repentance.
Apart from Nazim, an officer who worked in Police Drug Enforcement Department Abdul Rahman Rafeeu, and former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed were also charged with the same, for having had sex with Alamgir.
The hearing in Abdul Rahman Rafeeu's case was held previously, where he was given ten days to find a lawyer. While the hearing for Nasheed's case had also begun, the hearing was focused on a decision regarding a temporary order.
The Criminal Court had also sentenced Alamgir for seven months in jail for pleading guilty.
