Spokesperson Miuvan Mohamed has stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih supports maintaining the number of Parliament members at 87.
Speaking with the press on Thursday afternoon, Miuvan said that President Solih supports maintaining MP numbers as it is, in response to a question from the media.
"President Solih believes there should be a limit to the number of members in the Parliament. However, whether the number of members will remain at 87 or whether it will be capped at a certain amount is a change that needs to be brought through discussions between the Administration and the political parties", Miuvan said.
The motion to maintain the number of members in the Parliament was submitted by Maamigili Constituency MP and leader of Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim. The motion was supported by former president and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed.
The Parliament is currently debating the motion which states that the number of members should remain at 87 with a single member election to each seat.
