Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has stated that the projects that were budgeted for this year would continue on as planned.
The Minister's statement came in response to questions posed by lawmakers during the parliament sitting today, regarding delays in the commencement of several projects.
Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan had also questioned the Minister regarding a timeline for the development of a Health Center in Alif Alif Atoll Thoddoo and Ukulhas. He asked questions about when the project will be announced, and when a contract would be signed to begin the field work.
The Minister noted that even though projects are continuing without a halt, tender process for projects have seen delays due to the global economic situation. He added that due to inflated prices across the world, it is not the ideal time to sell Sukook and Bonds for debt repayments as forecasted in the budget for 2022.
Hence, the Minister noted that the main focus right now is on reducing expenditures where possible and to focus on payrolls and debt repayments.
The Minister highlighted that they are looking into cash flow management, and once the issues are resolved they will resume the tender process for projects.
