Finance Minister, Ibrahim Ameer, has stated that controlling rent is against free market mechanism.
Male' City populates a majority of the citizens in Maldives. As such, high rent has always been an issue amongst residents in Male' City.
In an interview given to 'Social', Minister Ameer stated that the current administration is working on social housing to solve the issues regarding rent.
"In private sector, when people construct their houses through home loans, regulating rent goes against market mechanism", Minister Ameer stated.
He further added that social housing is already very subsidised by the government.
Male' Tenants Union has submitted a petition to the Parliament with over 800 signatures, calling for a solution to rent issues. However, Parliament had decided at the time that there was not much the Parliament can do about the rent issues.
