Attorney General (AG)'s Office has submitted the Bills to Parliament to resume Green Tax and raise Goods and Services Tax (GST).

AG Office said on Sunday that the Bills have been submitted to parliament to revise the Tourism Act to resume Green Tax and GST Act. Additionally, AG Office also sent the Legal Profession Act for revision as well.

The Tourism Act was revised and ratified in June 2022, stating Green Tax will resume in 2023. As such, Green Tax cannot be collected for the remainder of 2022.

Green Tax contributes greatly to state revenue every year. Green Tax contributed 4.8% of state revenue until June 2022 - MVR 547 million.

The revision submitted by AG Office will dissolve the previous revision, if approved.

GST Act revision has been submitted to raise GST from 6% to 8% and TGST from 12% to 16%. The GST Act revision has been suggested to help ease the economic challenges faced by the Maldives in light of the global economic challenges.
