Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that competition between coalition members will lead to division in votes, thereby lowering chances of winning in Parliamentary elections.

President Maumoon said this while speaking at official launching event announcing candidates that are running with his approval under the “Maadhdhaa 4” slogan.

The former President noted that the situation would have been better if the Parliamentary seats for the election had been divided, as previously agreed upon by the four parties of the coalition.

He said that although coalition members are competing with one another in certain constituencies, the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) will remain with the coalition.

As such, President Maumoon said that there is no desire to spread discord within this nation. He  noted however that Maldives has undergone chaotic discord within the past five years.

The former President said that the purpose of the coalition was to accomplish certain national goals for this country.
